Interoperability Engineer

Work you ll do

Serve as a HIT subject matter advisor to a wide variety of project teams throughout the Deloitte GPS Health Technology practice. Will be the hands on HIT professional responsible for the development or assisting other delivery development teams in the stated subject areas below.

The team

Our GPS HT Practice is a fast growing part of our Firm. We serve as advisors in how data should be created, exchanged and stored using national and international standards that will bring greater interoperability or compliance with laws and regulations. The team is led by industry experts which allows the team to touch virtually every sector in the healthcare business in the US and abroad.


Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Desired Characteristics:

  • Be able to quickly assess client s operating environment and recommend areas for improvement

  • Build and maintain interfaces for healthcare integrations using various message types and connection methods

  • Create technical and clearly understandable documentation for both internal and external audiences' that define processes, specifications, and functionality of interfaces

  • Be comfortable being more than just a developer. Strong desire to help the client make it work

  • Extremely strong communication, coordination, project management, and facilitation skills

  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and proactively communicate with government stakeholders as needed

  • Adaptability in a constantly changing and politically sensitive environment

  • Comfort with ambiguity and fluid success criteria

  • Flexibility to work in a matrixed environment of commercial, contractor and government resources

  • Ability to use strong oral and written communication skills to communicate highly technical subject matter to broad audiences, including Executive-level audiences

  • Ability to think and act strategically, and with long-term objectives in mind when developing technical standards guidance

  • Experience in software and/or database design/analysis/testing desired

  • Experience with system architecture design and standards-based system interfaces desired

  • Experience with standards development and SDOs desired

  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Record systems (EHR) (Cerner, Epic, etc), MHS Genesis, DoD/VA legacy systems (VistA, AHLTA, etc) desired

  • Knowledge of Healthcare analytics, Informatics desired

  • Position is to be considered 100% travel. Client locations vary across the US. International travel may be required as needed.

Minimum Education, Experience and Competencies:

  • Healthcare Interface Implementation experience required

  • Hands-on experience with message types: EDI (X12, EDIFACT), XML, HL7, JSON, CSV

  • Experience with connection methods: E.g., SFTP, database, Listeners (HTTP, TCP, Web Service)

  • Experience with SOAP and RESTful services

  • Experience with Java I/O, JavaScript, JSON, SQL


  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred.

  • 5-7 Years experience in a healthcare integration experience.
