Deloitte Executive Editor in Miami, Florida

Deloitte Services LP is seeking an executive editor to join Deloitte Insights, Deloitte's publishing imprint for business research and insights. The executive editor will report to and partner with the global editor in chief to oversee content development and ensure content quality and value.

Deloitte Insights is a resource to current and future business/organizational leaders across industries and geographies, offering them the data, analyses, and ideas they need to develop and implement their strategic agendas. We publish 400+ thought leadership pieces annually, from articles and research reports, to data stories and infographics, to podcasts and videos.

Our aim is to ensure that Deloitte Insights' thought leadership connects with what target audiences care about and need to know, and offers them new ideas, relevant data, and actionable insights. That said, the executive editor will need to know and stay up to speed on what's new and noteworthy to our target audiences, and be able to use audience insights to make data-driven story decisions. You'll be a champion for our audience, with a deep understanding of their content consumption behaviors and preferences based on research in collaboration with our audience development team. Working closely with our editorial, production, design, UX, and technology teams, you'll apply an outside-in lens to content planning and storytelling, and deliver our content via a compelling, digital-first experience.

You'll also need to be a true-blue editor, with deep experience dissecting and reassembling stories to make them shine, someone who both excels at strategic storytelling and can apply AP style in their sleep-someone who knows the rules but also has the nuanced editorial skills to know how, when, and why to break them. In this role, you'll need to know when a draft is fine as is and when (and how) to attack a draft and distill it to its essence.

And you'll need to be an expert coach. The executive editor will be collaborating with senior editors, editors, and assistant editors to help them improve their work-and also with subject matter experts (researchers and business partners) who may or may not be adept writers in their own right. This requires strong stakeholder management skills and influence to ensure that editors learn from you in each collaboration, and authors see the logic and value of your suggested edits.

The ideal candidate will have deep journalistic experience; a passion for accuracy, clarity, and compelling storytelling; and a demonstrated ability to communicate big ideas simply. This candidate will have experience working with senior business leaders and subject matter experts across a variety of business topics. The candidate should understand the dynamics of modern digital publishing and best practices for optimizing business content.

Our Deloitte Insights publishing team comprises editors plus production, audience analytics, audience development, and digital operations professionals located around the world. The executive editor will report to the editor in chief, based in the United States.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Owning content quality: Serving as the second set of eyes on Deloitte Insights content by working closely with editors, authors, and subject matter experts to ensure that thought leadership content (from short-form copywriting for the web to long-form research reports) meets Deloitte Insights' quality criteria

  • Acting as a champion for the audience and a storytelling strategist to ensure that each content project is clear and compelling-that the story flows logically and ensures reader/viewer/listener engagement from start to finish, the ideas are well-differentiated and communicated accurately and directly, the phrasing is dynamic and conversational, the overall content project will be perceived by target audiences as high-quality and high-value, and the content will achieve the content creators' objectives

  • Managing editorial team members in collaboration with the editor in chief and the editorial lead

  • Training and advising editors, and helping them improve their skills project by project

  • Coaching Deloitte content creators on language usage, writing style, and storytelling effectiveness

  • Leading special publishing projects, such as the development of our biannual print publication, Deloitte Insights Magazine

  • Collaborating with Deloitte Insights publishing leaders to modernize and implement our evolving publishing strategy

  • Staying up to speed on storytelling trends, audience engagement best practices, and multichannel publishing innovations to help Deloitte Insights continuously improve

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in business journalism or business insights/thought leadership editing within an organization/association

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in English literature, journalism, communications, or similar)

  • Exceptional editing skills, a mastery of both conversational phrasing and AP style, and the ability to explain/"sell" edits to authors in a collegial way

  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills; proven ability to translate complex concepts into easily digestible terms

  • Excellent attention to detail, laser focus on quality, and ability to consider the big picture

  • Outside-in orientation, considering all content projects from the perspective of the target audience and their needs/interests

  • Versatile writing and editing skills, from writing engaging short-form web copy to developmentally editing long-form research reports on complex topics

  • Team leadership experience

  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, including the confidence to interact with and influence personnel at all levels, as well as listening skills, responsiveness, flexibility, initiative, decision-making, conflict resolution, and tact

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, content management systems, and workflow and collaboration tools such as Workfront, Microsoft Teams, etc.; knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint

  • Project management and leadership experience: Ability to manage multiple projects with quick turnaround times simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a larger, multifunctional team

  • Limited Sponsorship: Limited immigration sponsorship may be available

Preferred:

  • Experience in a publishing/media house

  • Experience with corporate thought leadership and global, cross-industry content

  • Experience with creating multimedia content

  • Experience working remotely with a global team
